The scent of freshly baked bread filled the air as David pulled the loaf from the oven. The kitchen was a flurry of activity, the clatter of pots and pans, the sizzle of the sausage in the pan – all contributed to the cheerful chaos. He loved the mornings when he had nothing planned.

He poured himself a cup of coffee and walked to the window, watching the city slowly wake up. He felt the warmth spreading through him.

His phone buzzed. He knew it was from the building management. He left it there, untouched. It could wait. He had a perfectly good breakfast to eat.
